Kinetic Energy Interceptor
Part of the layered missile defense system envisioned by the United States Missile Defense Agency, the Kinetic Energy Interceptors (KEI) program will give the United States significant defensive capability against enemy missiles in their most vulnerable stage - the boost/ascent phase of flight - before re-entry vehicles, decoys or counter-measures can be deployed. Northrop Grumman Corporation is serving as the prime integration contractor for this effort.
KEI is a critical element of the Ballistic Missile Defense System, consisting of three components: a mobile launcher, the interceptor missile, and the command and control battle management and communications (C2BMC) sub-systems. It is deployable anywhere in the world using United States military aircraft. The initial land-based capability is designed for easy transition to sea-based platforms.
KEI will complement other ballistic missile defense programs currently underway. Its visible and rapidly deployable design makes it an effective deterrent.
